Abstract
For the highest political and legal authority in the constitution of any country, conditions and attributes are considered so that the person holding that position can undertake various functions in society. This issue has not been overlooked by the drafters of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The drafters of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in various principles of this law, especially Article 109 of the Constitution, have explained and clarified the conditions and attributes of the Supreme Leader and his functions in the Islamic society. One of the individuals who played a significant role in this matter in the Assembly for the Final Review of the Constitution was Martyr Ayatullah Dr. Beheshti. The present study, drawing upon a descriptive-analytical method, seeks to find an answer to the question of how the conditions and functions of the leader of the Islamic society are analyzed in light of the theory of Ummah and Imamate from the perspective of Martyr Beheshti. The results of this research indicate that, from the viewpoint of Martyr Beheshti, the leader of the Islamic system must possess three categories of conditions—namely, scientific competence, moral competence, and managerial competence—to assume the position of an authority to rule, in order to implement and exercise three fundamental functions in Islamic society: “the function of safeguarding Islamic rulings and values,” “the function of guiding and directing the Muslim community (Ummah), and “the function of religious education and training,” so that, through this, he can guide the Islamic society to its ultimate goal, which is worldly and otherworldly happiness.
